Lakbay Lahi World Music / Ethnic / Organic Sound Art Band Members: Gerard “Dok” Natividad (hegalong, guitar) Ryan Calderon (lead djembe, bandurria) Francis Yabis (djembe, kubing, flute) Heidi Sarno (T’boli bells, shakes, shekere, devil’s water chimes, rattles) Roy Cruz (bass guitar) Nina Garcia (dance) Sean Roy Yulo (bass djembe) Abet Esguerra (T'boli bells, kubing, djembe) Althea Mari (dance) Mel Araneta (dance) Lakbay Lahi (Racial Journey) is built on the philosophy that deep satisfaction from sound is something innate...inborn. For the span of 9 months that every human has spent inside the womb of their mother, they have, consciously or unconsciously, been listening to the music of LIFE - wiggling themselves inside the small confines of the placenta as the hearts of their loving mothers continuously beat. Creating a never ending solo concerto of a 'percussionist', stopping the performance would mean death to the 'musician' and/or the 'listener' as well. Formed in 1999 in Cavite, Lakbay Lahi’s roots can be found in De La Salle University Dasmariñas. Majority of the individuals who gave rise to the band were students from the DLSU-D Mountaineering Society, as well the La Salle Filipiniana Dance Company. Numerous performances as a loose, open group went by before Lakbay Lahi’s core group was finally formed. Its current lineup is a collective of individuals engaged in the field of sound, performance, visual and literary arts. Combining these disciplines, Lakbay Lahi, tries to bring about this innate feeling of oneness between man and music...between soul and sound. Playing instruments which are commonly used by ethnic groups in the Philippines (as well as some instruments which are of foreign origin), Lakbay Lahi produces sound which they themselves cannot perfectly replicate on separate performances. ‘Free-form' is practiced on every organic sound art piece. The basic melodies are used as a foundation, but there is always a level of uniqueness between performances. Emotional, psychological and spiritual status of the performers at the very moment of performance contributes to the color and texture of the organic sound art piece. To date, Lakbay Lahi has released an independently-produced album (Self-titled, © 2004), the music from which have been used in numerous video and film productions. Lakbay Lahi’s live gigs have included private events and countless conventions, student, art, and environmental events, including one leg of the Miss Earth International 2006 pageant.
